Ear Pain Relief? 5 Actions to Take
When your ears are in pain you’ll do just about anything for ear pain relief. Of course, “just about anything” typically involves an over the counter spray or, if you have great health insurance, a trip to the doctors. Here are five things to consider when it comes to geting a little relief from your ear pain.
1. See a doctor.
Ear issues are not the kind of thing that you want to sit on for a long time, especially if you find yourself in a lot of pain. Sure, if you notice a dull pain in your ear you may try some over the counter meds to try and counteract it, but if the pain persists or gets worse you need to go to the ear doctor. If you do have an infection, or an issue with your ear drums or canals, they can get you the prescription meds or ear exercises which can help clear up the pain right away.
2. Keep your ears dry.
This falls under the “common sense” file, but if you find yourself with ear pain or an infection you need to make sure that you keep your ear canals dry. If you are going to take a shower use either cotton swabs or water proof ear plugs to keep them dry. If you need to go swimming… well, don’t. If you absolutely have to get in the water, though, make sure you get a good quality water proof earplug.
3. Over the counter medication.
Over the counter medication can be your best friend if you are suffering from minor ear ache pain. There are a variety of sprays, pills and balms out there that can help you get at least some relief. The thing is, if symptoms persist after a couple of days or actually get worse, it’s obvious that the over the counter stuff isn’t working. This means that going to the doctor is something that you just might have to do.
4. Use common sense.
When it comes down to it, as mentioned earlier, using common sense is a great way to help aid the recovery of your ears. For example, if you are having ear pains, or are having issues with your hearing, the last thing that you want to do is wear earphones, or stick anything else deep into your ear. Using a bit of common sense will go a long way when it comes to your ears.
5. Keep your ears clean.
As with anything out there, the best way to prevent issues with your ears is to keep them clean. You know those q-tips that you have roughly 10,000 of in that big package you bought? Use them regularly (a couple times per week) to keep your ear canals clean, just be extremely careful you don’t stick the q-tip in to deeply into your ears, be gentle. Also, if you go to concerts or go swimming often use earplugs. The best way to get relief is to not get it in the first place.

What’s your feelings on using Q-Tips?
Hi John –
As long as they are used correctly they are a great way to clean the ear. Making sure NOT to put the Q-Tip too far into the ear, if these steps are not taken then serious damage can be done to the ears.
Thanks for the comment!
